Regulated Materials Management

Sanexen, a Canadian leader within the Regulated Materials Management field for over 30 years, offers integrated PCB residue management services that draw from its expertise and self-developed technologies.

Our turnkey projects include the following steps:

  • Waste identification
  • Waste consolidation
  • Transport and Handling
  • Processing and disposal of all materials contaminated by PCBs;
  • Reclassification of equipment and storage sites contaminated by PCBs.

To date, Sanexen has effectively processed, regenerated and recycled over 30 million L of PCB-contaminated mineral oil using our PCBD® dechlorination process. Over 30,000 tonnes of waste, electrical equipment and PCB-contaminated soil have been destroyed using Sanexen’s proprietary processes, including:

  • Ultrasorption®
  • Transport to various certified treatment centres for final destruction of PCB contaminated waste.

Handling

Sanexen performs a range of handling services, from simple site characterization to decommissioning of sites and PCB-contaminated materials. Throughout the years, the company has developed expertise in specific cases including the dismantling of ASKAREL-type transformers. Sanexen has all the necessary certifications and permits required for performing this type of work anywhere in Canada.

Handling Sanexen ensures that PCB-contaminated waste is labelled and packaged in compliance with the Hazardous Material Transportation regulations. PCB-contaminated waste is sorted to allow for optimal, consistent packaging, in order to minimize disposal costs.

PCB-contaminated waste is directed to authorized treatment centres by qualified and certified staff using Sanexen’s highly effective transport system. The company operates in compliance with the Hazardous Material Transportation regulations.

Processes

Sanexen developed its proprietary PCBD® process for the decontamination and regeneration of PCB-contaminated mineral oils. The ability of this mobile process to perform in situ decontamination on either de-energized or energized transformers represents a significant asset.

Ultrasorption® is another of Sanexen’s proprietary technologies used in the treatment of water contaminated by heavy organic compounds such as PCBs, PAHs and PCPs. This process, also mobile, can be adapted according to project requirements.

Futhermore, Sanexen provides certificates of destruction for use in declassifying PCB-contaminated materials. The company declassifies sites previously used for storing PCB-contaminated materials prior to undertaking the site abandonment process based on authorities' environmental standards.
