Treatment of Clay contaminated by Volatils Organic Compound Soil Treatment - Research and development

Following the decommissioning of a petrochemical plant, environmental remediation work was scheduled for the sector of the site previously used for the manufacturing of vinyl chloride and dichloroethane. The remediation presented a significant technological challenge, as the contamination was dispersed throughout approximately 175,000 m3 of contaminated soils composed primarily of wet, plastic clay with very low permeability. The treatment approach, consisting of aerating the impacted clay, was first validated by conducting a pilot project. Soil samples were collected and analyzed to confirm the effectiveness of the treatment, and assess the possibility of its use for the full‑scale remediation.

Currently, the full-scale treatment of the 175,000 m3 of soils is 95% complete. Final completion is anticipated in summer 2019.
