CHALLENGES
The Municipality of Îles-de-la-Madeleine needed to manage a large volume of treated and untreated wood accumulated from 2006 to 2017 at the Waste Management Centre (CGMR). Without local outlets, over 10,000 tonnes of material had to be transported off the archipelago for recovery or disposal. The main challenge was ensuring efficient waste management despite a large volume of mixed debris (fibreglass, shingles, metal, fishing nets, etc.), while planning complex maritime and land logistics in compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements.
BACKGROUND
Following a public call for tenders, Sanexen was awarded the contract to manage the grinding, loading, transportation, and disposal operations of the wood accumulated at the Îles-de-la-Madeleine CGMR. The mandate also included sorting debris in the wood piles, hauling it to authorized facilities, and fully coordinating road and sea transport to processing and disposal sites located in New Brunswick and Gaspésie.
Solution
Sanexen implemented an integrated waste management solution based on rigorous logistical planning and coordinated execution of operations across multiple transport modes.
The work included:
- Grinding all the wood using specialized equipment;
- Loading and road transport to the port of Cap-aux-Meules;
- Loading and maritime shipment of the wood to the port of Belledune;
- Final transport to Envirem Organics facilities for reclamation;
- Screening materials containing a high proportion of debris;
- Waste management and debris disposal at an authorized engineered landfill site;
- Complete coordination of the supply chain to ensure safe transport with no release of contaminants into the air or water.
This approach optimized transport operations, maximized the recovery of reusable materials, and ensured compliant management of non-recoverable residues.
