Metal concentrations in certain soils, Murdochville Risk Assessment

From 1953 to 2002, Noranda Inc.’s Gaspé copper smelter in Murdochville mined copper deposits and operated ore and concentrate treatment and processing plants. These activities left deposits of metal-containing particles in the soil of Murdochville, a city built in 1953 and located less than 2 km away from the industrial complex.

Since metal concentrations in certain soils still exceed current maximum regulatory limits, Noranda mandated Sanexen Environmental Services inc. to assess the toxicological (human health) and ecotoxicological (environment) risks associated with the presence of metals in the soil found in the City of Murdochville. An additional objective of this assessment was to define appropriate management measures.
